meet the band

Lead vocalist and dancer Kelly Owens has done more in her 29 years than most people do in a lifetime. She's going into her second year as a Washington Redskins Cheerleader and prior to that, she was the captain of the Washington Wizards Dance team for 3 years where she was discovered by Kaleidoscope singing solo at the MCI Center.. But there is much more to Kelly than just singing and dancing. Kelly graduated from Howard University with a major in math and a minor in voice. Kelly donates as much of her time allows to local charity events. And as a Wizards dancer and Redskins cheerleader she has made several trips to the Middle East, Europe, Central America, the Balkins and Greenland to entertain and boost the morale of our troops.

Greg Carpenter, Kaleidoscope’s lead male vocalist , has that classic, rich, R & B voice that works perfectly for virtually any style of music. But in addition to his fabulous voice, Greg has that unique ability to connect with his audience. His warmth, good looks and infectious charm enable him to command his audience and make him one of the best front men you can find. Greg will get everyone involved in lively audience participation that will put your party into overdrive and leave your guests raving about your event long after the last note has faded.

Nichole Reed rounds out Kaleidoscope’s dynamic frontline. The crowning winner of the Imperial Potentate Beauty Competition (which Vanessa Williams also won as a young woman) as well as numerous national vocal competitions, Nichole has a voice that always elicits standing ovations. People are amazed at the powerful, soulful voice wrapped up in such a petite package. She has performed for such notables as Chief Charles Moose, recently of the Montgomery County, Md. Police Department, Lieutenant Governor Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, County Executive Doug Duncan of Montgomery County and Mayor Sidney Katz of Gaithersburg, Md. as well as many prestigious venues such as the Kennedy Center, The Apollo Theater in NY and The Black Family Reunion. Her dance moves, along with Kelly’s, keep eyes glued to the stage. She is truly an adorable bundle of dynamite.

Bob Troutman is an amazing keyboardist. He is what is known as a “parts” player. Bob doesn’t just play the chords and notes to a song. He has the skill and equipment to make his music sound exactly as you hear on the recording. He is the cornerstone of Kaleidoscope’s extremely tight and funky rhythm section and is as fun to watch as he is to listen to. It is obvious how much he enjoys playing and his energy and enthusiasm is felt by everyone around him.

Guitarist Bob Margolis thrives on performing the wide range of music in Kaleidoscope’s repertoire. In addition to his playing with the band, Bob is a freelance musician, session player, teacher and leader of his own jazz and blues groups. Bob graduated magna cum laude from Towson University with a BA in Jazz Performance.

Bassist Percy White is the newest member of Kaleidoscope yet the band can’t remember what it was like before he came along to lay down the most amazing grooves. He is truly an incredible player. With Percy driving the band (and that is exactly what he does) guests just can’t sit still. The dance floor is always packed and much of the credit goes to Percy.

Ralph Rillon is the heartbeat of Kaleidoscope. Along with Percy, he provides the driving rhythm that keeps the dance floor packed. And once Kaleidoscope gets you and your guests on the dance floor, he doesn’t give you the opportunity to sit down because he segues from one tune to the next without missing a beat. Ralph calls the tunes and he always has his finger on the pulse of the party. He is a seasoned musician and performer and knows from experience what music works best at any given moment.

Clark Kendrick has been playing the “bone” for 37 years. He has toured nationally and has appeared with such acts as Three Dog Night, Kansas and Boston. Clark’s Rock and Funk roots provide the punch to Kaleidoscope’s lively horn section. Clark is an amazingly solid and reliable player and is truly the back”bone” of the section. But when a song does not call for his horn Clark will most likely be playing one of his many percussion instruments.

Howard Riley is one of the most talented and versatile sax players in the DC area. He was formally trained at Howard University. His versatility enables him to slide effortlessly into all genres including Jazz, Rock, R&B and Pop. He has opened for such acts as Teddy Pendergrass, Patti LaBelle, Stanley Turrentine and Skye as well as many notable DC artists. Howard has been with Kaleidoscope for 7 years.
